Infection control and salon safety

Know the difference between cleaning, disinfecting, and sterilizing; how to follow a disinfectant label; how to handle single-use items; and what to do during blood exposure. Learn storage and laundry rules, personal protective equipment, and when a service must stop.

Hair and scalp science

Review the cuticle, cortex, medulla, follicle, growth cycle, texture, density, porosity, and elasticity. Recognize conditions that affect a service and signs that require referral rather than a cosmetic treatment.

Haircutting, styling, color, and texture

Connect tools and techniques to outcomes: elevation, overdirection, guidelines, thermal safety, color neutralization, developer action, preliminary tests, permanent waving, and chemical relaxing.

Skin and nail care

Study basic skin and nail anatomy, analysis, contraindications, facials, hair removal, manicure and pedicure procedures, and enhancement safety. Remember that cosmetologists recognize and refer suspected disease; they do not diagnose it.

Professional practice

Consultation, recordkeeping, informed service decisions, communication, and safe workstation habits support both exam answers and real clients. Add your state’s laws and prohibited practices from the official source.
